Curious about something new?
LOIBEN | WACHAU | AUSTRIA
Giving nature it’s time. Especially the wines.
Not everything is new, but everything does come with fresh ideas. This is how Simon Gattinger’s approach towards winemaking can be described. Logical, then, that the vineyards are handled as gently as possible. Because this is where wine quality is formed. That means hundreds of touches done by the hands of the family throughout the year—all to ensure that the vines can develop and reach their greatest potential. This handiwork is the basis of brining authentic wine into the bottle. Exactly that—it’s exactly that, which Simon wants. For him, this also includes the particularly careful processing of the grapes and their individualized guidance into the cellar. Whatever is needed. Perhaps a tick more maceration time—for that extra grip. Or more time on fine lees so the wine can develop. The result is wines with finesse, precision, and joy—wine you remember, wines that make you say, “Another glass, please!” After all, that’s the best compliment for a winemaker.

RECIPE FOR FUTURE SUCCESS
In the picturesque Wachau, tradition and steadfastness are deeply rooted, upheld by a rich culture and an extraordinary constancy. Over decades, the Danube Valley between Melk and Krems has produced unique and characterful wines. Yet, wine is not a static entity - it is in constant flux, continuously evolving. Simon is not only part of this change but an active driver of its dynamics, amidst the venerable Wachau. The profound cultural connection has shaped this region into what it is today. However, the future requires the establishment of new standards to preserve the wine-growing region with its magnificent outlook. Change, especially regarding sustainable and organic viticulture, is an essential step that the winemakers in the Wachau must take together, Simon believes.
Simon Gattinger wants one thing: to bring the details into the glass. To make differences tangible; whether its with Grüner Veltliner from Ried Klostersatz where the Danubian gravel sets the stage, or with wines from the highest laid terraces like Ried Höhereck—the best Riesling terroir.
Speaking of wine terraces—they give the Wachau it’s famous look. The dry stone walls make wine production in the steep hills of the Wachau possible, and at the same time, they function as the largest beneficial insect hotel in the country. Bees, Beetles, and Co.—they ensure that our wines can grow on vital soils!
The work in the steep terraces demands a lot. Handiwork. Muscle power. A love of detail. And that’s a good thing. Because the highest quality arises from the precision of personal touch.
